The Algarve offers ideal all year round conditions for golf, for both amateurs and professionals.
The mild climate, from the Atlantic together with the outstanding landscape and excellent condition of the courses make the Algarve one of the preferred destination for European golfers, and is now regarded as a product of elite for its fans.
The Penina Golf Course, Portimao, opened in 1966, and was the first course built in the Algarve. The location, originally a rice field was transformed into a golf course and surrounded by trees.
Since then, the construction of golf courses in the Algarve proliferated and today, one can find in this region more than half of the Portuguese golf courses, some of them listed among the top European and global courses, given the quality of their designs and maintenance.
Quinta do Lago, Vilamoura and Vale do Lobo are just some of the other golf courses in the Algarve known by golfers around the world. Less known, but increasingly numerous, are the beautiful Eastern Algarve golf courses.
The importance of golf tourism in the Algarve is so evident that, the Portuguese Open will be held at least every two years in this region.
This all year golfer’s paradise, was, in 2006, awarded the main prize in worldwide golf tourism, having been voted Established Golf Destination of the Year.
